Our Response to the 2014 State of the Union Address

President Obama has addressed America, with the State of the Union speech. America is facing growing unemployment over the next 12 months. Businesses are closing and we are finding the Affordable Care Act is not meeting what was promised.

President Obama did make one comment that stood out, tonight. Iran is supporting the Hezbollah terrorist group and al Qaeda is still a threat that remains. Though this was only a minor point in his speech, it carries more weight in the Foreign Policy of our future than many Americans will realize. Yet, President Obama still wishes to negotiate with Iran, comparing policies to those of Presidents Kennedy and Reagan with the Soviet Union. However, during the Cold War, our military was strengthened to ensure we had the strength to counter any threat. President Obama sees increasing surveillance as the answer.

President Obama stated, “As this time of war draws to a close, a new generation of heroes returns to civilian life. We’ll keep slashing that backlog so our veterans receive the benefits they’ve earned, and our wounded warriors receive the health care – including the mental health care – that they need. We’ll keep working to help all our veterans translate their skills and leadership into jobs here at home. And we all continue to join forces to honor and support our remarkable military families.”  Of course, in his comments on the State of the Union, Rep. Paul Ryan (R) Wis, expressed his continued desire to support President Obama in cutting the military spending and benefits.

President Obama praised his own reduction of troops in Afghanistan, but failed to mention the increased loss of lives in Afghanistan. It is the President’s responsibility to ensure our troops are fully armed and able to fight the fight as they are ordered.

Before we move on to other items, this statement comes just a month after the Ryan-Murray budget was passed, and President Obama signed into law, taking away the COLA of our military retirees, including those that left parts of themselves on the battlefield; a battlefield that was authorized by the same people that took these benefits. By having Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg attend, President Obama is patronizing our military. It was in bad taste to parade around one of the service members injured in a war that then Senator Obama voted for, yet President Obama just cu t he benefits for this man when he leaves service.

To help America, President Obama is going to raise the minimum wage on Federal employees to $10.10 per hour. Another case of whitewash to make things look like an effort. The lowest federal pay is $9.83, for a GS-1, Step 1 employee with the nation’s lowest locality pay, yet the lowest entry positions listed are internship and student positions that are listed as GS-3 jobs. The lowest ranking military member, an E-1 under 6 months of service, on a 40 hour week basis, only earns $8.175 per hour.

High School graduation rates are rising to a 40 year high, yet the government has chosen to change how teachers are teaching and force mandate common core across the nation, rather than focus on real assistance to the school districts failing at 31.5% graduation rates. Common Core is not the cause of the rise in graduation rates.

The creation of jobs pales in comparison to the jobs lost. The unemployed number over 10 million people.

The campaigning for the Affordable Care Act, during the State of the Union, without announcing how to make it work, other than enrolling more people, tells how single focused this administration truly is. The statements on tax reform only covered a need to reform, yet no mention as to how to change the tax codes to make them user friendly.

While discussing his agenda/policy of health care and statement on taxes, President Obama discussed a creation of a “MyRA” for personal savings toward retirement. After the miserable execution of ObamaCare, losses of personal doctors, losses of and coverage, President Obama wishes the US Treasury to create a means to have American invest in their own retirement, through the government. We have that, it is called Social Security and it must be left alone to allow our Seniors to maintain the life they paid into for decades. Any further plans to “governmentalize” life choices must be halted. ObamaCare is hurting private industry and any federal banking programs have the potential to damage our banking industry, at the level of personal finances.

The way forward for America is a revitalization of the workfare programs from our nation’s past and incentives for small businesses to open and grow. Immigration reform, after securing our borders, without granting amnesty and allowing these immigrants already in America to work, pay taxes and process to legally remain in America, but without a blanket amnesty program.

Yes, this needs to be a year of action. Americans moving to put leaders in office, to work to recover our nation, not a few making decisions and “pen and ink” orders to execute them.

On a final note: This one was sent in to me, while I was preparing this. President Obama stated, “The point is, there are millions of Americans outside Washington who are tired of stale political arguments, and are moving this country forward.” – Hey! Even he’s heard about us (VPA)!
